Problems in creating PDFs from Indesign...

The Acrobat PDF Printer does not work under Snow Leopard anymore.

Adobe gives this alternative:

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

After an update to Acrobat 9.1.3 PDFs should now be generated through a new ''Save as Adobe PDF'' option under the ''PDF'' button in the system print dialog.

This does not at all work in Adobe Indesign with it's proprietary print dialog. The PDF-Button is only available in the system print dialog (I know it is accessible from within the Indesign print dialog panel, yet clicking on the PDF button and selecting ''Save as Adobe PDF'' is ignored).

To make things worse: If you follow the advice to delete the Acrobat Printer from the ''Print %26amp; Fax'' panel this deletes the ADPDF9.PPD from the Library/PPD folder! You even cannot produce .ps files and distill them manually. Fortunately I was able to restore the ADPDF9.PPD from a backup.

This is really annoying: How can Adobe state everything works fine under Snow Leopard if you are not able to create PDFs any more? Or did I miss something?

But why do you not use Export to pdf? That works fine under SL.

Problems in creating PDFs from Indesign...

Because Indesign's ''Export to PDF'' in most cases produces much bigger PDF file sizes than Acrobat Distiller (with identical settings).

With Snow Leopard the ppd in the pdf printer is now a generic printer. It is not adobe pdf (Adobe pdf 3018.101). Now it is not possibile print booklet or make .ps documents.

Running ID 6.0.3 on SL I can print postscript just fine using the Adobe 9.0 PPD. And they distill just fine with Acrobat Distiller.

First point: Anyone jumping into a new operating system on day one with a production machine is taking a big risk.

Did you read that KB article?

This was caused by Apple's actions. Contact them.

Postscript is a dead end today and this is just another nail in the coffin. Adobe has recommended only exporting PDFs for quite a few years now. Distilling of postscript isn't even done with the PDF maker in MS Office products.

Export the PDF. Quality is far more important than file size.

On the problem of not being able to print brochures! What do you think Bob?

I've never thought much of that feature anyway. I realize it's pain for some...but again, this is on Apple.

Contact them and complain.

Bob

That is quite an interesting answer. I always remembered rather not to use the built in export feature of Adobe Indesign %26amp; Co but rather always go the ''regular'' way via Distiller, because this would result not only in more compact files but be less risky regarding problems at the print shop.

So you say I should use the export because it produces cleaner PDFs?

As always, speak to your printer. But generally speaking, yes, export is superior.

Bob

Mario: You still can use the brochure feature - just make sure to select the Adobe PDF 9.0-PPD in the ''Printer Setup...'' (=''Druckereinstellungen...'' in my German screenshot). Although the button will say ''Print'' (=''Drucken'') it will prompt for a place to save a .ps file. You can drag that on Distiller to create the PDF.

If you don't have that PPD in your list anymore, you probably deleted the ''Adobe PDF Printer''. You then will have to manually transfer the ADPDF9.PPD from a backup to /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/

Printing to postscript and distilling for 4C hasn't been necessary for a while now. For a long time I would print to postscript and distill for black output only to get a true black plate. IIRC, you would get a cmyk black or a black that wasn't 100% in the solids. That's not an issue today.

There are also a couple of imposing scripts around that might work for you. Run the script, then export to PDF...

Hi.

make this.

1. Go to the Apple%26gt; System Preferences...

2.?Open the ''Print %26amp; Fax'' preference panel.

3. Select the Printing tab, to get to the printers list.

4.?Select the printer ''Adobe PDF 9.0''.

5. Click the options and supplies button.

6. Choose the Drive.

Now I have reinstalled Leopard. but first like a Drive I have listed only a ''Generic Printer''.

I tried to reassign it ADPDF9.PPD but is not recognized and automatically resets to a generic printer.

So after some?tests that I have found here

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/509/cpsid_50981.html

I have reinstall leopard

This has been my problem.
