MAC

Hi Folks,

I am using LR since a while now and my catalogue is growing, growing till the I discover that my disk is full.

I would like to move all my catalogues (images and operation applied to them) to another disk of bigger size.

Is there a standard procedure to follow for doing so.

In the same way, I will move from the PC world to the Mac world very recently and... I would like to retrieve my LR catalogue as it is in my PC.

Does someone have done that. IS it easy and safe? I presume?that it is likely a?procedure close to the previous one.

ok reading a bit more the FAQ there might something easy to do as moving the LR folder. I will try this! If any has done that already I am interested in an 'lessn learnt'

Cheers,

Hi. This is my suggestion.

If your original catalog is set to write ''Automatically write changes to XMP'', you can just copy your files from the original drive to your newer drive. Then, with your LR on your Mac, start a new catalog, name it accordingly and import from the new drive.?Of course, when you import, you have to choose ''Add photos to catalog without moving'' since you already have them on your new drive.

In this way, you would still have the old catalog in your PC and the new catalog in your Mac.?In which case, you will have a back-up, just in case.

I hope this helps.

A one time migration of LR data is pretty easy. There are 4 things you need to address.

1) The original image files. These can be copied/moved to the new system just as they are. Preservation of the existing folder trees is 'a good thing'. If you can get them on the same drive letter, that's a bonus.

2) The LR catalog database file(s). This is a file of type *.lrcat (that's a lower case ''L'', not an upper case ''i''.

3) The LR preview cache. This is a folder named *.lrdata, that should sit beside the *.lrcat file above. It's not mandatory to move this, because it will regenerate itself when needed. But you may save some re-rendering time, by moving/copying it to the same location relative to the *.lrcat file where you found it.

4) Your personal LR preferences, various presets, plugins, etc. If you do all this, and then install LR on the new machine, everything should come up just as you left it on the old machine.

Because of the different folder structures on the osx machine you may have to relocate your files.

To located missing photos in a folder and its subfolders, select a folder in the Folders panel, choose Library %26gt; Synchronize Folder, and click Show Missing Photos.

Of course the other solution especially if you work both on a MAC and a Windows machine is to use an external disk and locate the catalogue files and images on that. Or to have a separate catlogue on each machine, locate the image files on an external disc, write changes to xmp and just regullarly update meta data when ever using the catalogue in each machine. The second way is usually faster whilst working, but requires more discipline.
